What do we do?

About us

Our meetings are used to discuss and plan how best to manage Coed-yr-Hela.  Currently, we are working with BCBC to address ash die back and to remove trees damaged in recent storms.

Our discussions are supported by assessment visits to the woods, when we decide on and prioritise work to be done.  Major works are carried out as and when needed; general maintenance work is usually done on a Sunday morning, 10.00 a.m. – 12 noon.  Volunteers are always welcome!

We also apply for funding for specific activities and have been supported in this by BAVO (Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations).

Community values

Coed Pen-y-fai Trust is eager to interact with the community wherever possible.  We have worked with our neighbours at the Scout Hall, putting up bird boxes with the Scouts and Cubs and teaching them about Himalayan Balsam.

Working with local schools

We also have a close association with Pen-y-fai Church in Wales Primary School; every year we organise a Woods Day, when year groups come to the wood and carry out woodland challenges.  These Woods Days are definitely popular with the participants –  click here to see some of the feedback from our 2024 Day!

Class teachers also take their students to Coed-yr-Hela and we have created a seating area for them in the centre of the wood.

Volunteering

We are always looking for volunteers who are willing to give up 2 hours on a Sunday morning.  This does not have to be a regular commitment – if you are interested in getting some fresh air and exercise whilst benefiting the community, please look for dates in our calendar or contact us at admin@coedpenyfaitrust.co.uk.

Fundraising

Looking after the woods costs money, and although we try our best to keep these costs as low as possible by shopping around and doing most of the work ourselves, we still need to raise funds for insurance, equipment and occasional professional services.  We appreciate public support for our fundraising activities and would welcome anyone volunteering to raise funds for us.  Donations of any size are gratefully received.  For further information, please contact us on admin@coedpenyfaitrust.co.uk
